The academy has adopted the National Curriculum 2014. To find out what is covered in each subject please explore our curriculum pages.
Lower Key Stage Two Curriculum
In Year 3 and 4, we follow a reflective curriculum where foundation subjects are taught together in an exciting cross-curricular topic format. Whether stepping back in time to 1066, across Europe to ancient Greece or discovering the streets of the USA, the children are immersed in their learning and we work hard to make the lessons fun and engaging. Once every half term, a visitor or trip is used to engage and excite our pupils to the new topic we will be covering and allows them to be fully submerged in their learning and go deeper with their thinking. As part of their homework, we have introduced a topic project which is an exciting and creative way in which parents can celebrate and support their children with their afternoon lessons.
In addition to this, we teach discrete sessions in Maths, English, Spelling, Reading, French, ICT and Physical Education. The children also develop their Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education, as well as learn about Fundamental British Values, through a PSHCE and RE program.
In Mathematics, the children are taught a same day intervention approach. This essentially means we teach mathmatics at the age related level first developing their fluency then their mastery of the National Curriculum objectives. As part of their homework, the children also have access to the Times Table Rockstar website, which provides a fun, yet educational way of supporting the learning multiplication tables.
In English, the children are inspired through quality texts, animations, videos and various other stimulus such as historical events to help create imaginative and lively writing, spanning a wide range of genres. We also enjoy whole class reading, which enables lively discussion and an in-depth knowledge of three novels per year group. This year, Year 3 children will be studying Michael Morpurgo’s ‘This Morning I Met a Whale’, Philip Pullman’s ‘The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’, and E.B. White’s ‘Charlotte’s Web’. In Year 4, children will be studying Ted Hughes’ ‘The Iron Man’, J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, and Philip Ridley’s ‘Krindlekrax’. As part of our homework, this year we are introducing the use of the Spelling Shed website to support the Year 3 and 4s in their spellings.
