Academy Advisory Body

Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about Montagu Academy's Academy Advisory Board (AAB) and the work that they do. The main role of the AAB is to support the Principal and the staff – the phrase often used to describe this role is ‘a critical friend’. They help to set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of academy life. The two key documents used for this are the Academy Development Plan and the Self Evaluation Form. The Academy Development Plan sets out a strategic plan for improving the academy, with targets that everyone works towards and the SEF sets out how well the academy is doing and where we aim to make improvements.

AAB legal duties include:-

  • setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
  • approving the school budget
  • reviewing progress against the school's budget and objectives
  • appointing, challenging and supporting the Principal

The AAB meets at least once every term. On each agenda is a 'spotlight' presentation. This relates to aspects of academy life that the governors or senior leaders feel would be useful to share and provides an opportunity to challenge middle leaders as well as senior leaders. Spotlight sessions are then followed up by organised visits/learning walks to the academy to see the key points of any presentation in action. The SEND and Safeguarding governors also make additional visits to the academy to challenge leaders in relation to their role.

The AAB members are committed to providing an inspirational and innovative environment for all pupils to enjoy during their time at our academy.

Our Academy Advisory Board meetings are usually held in an afternoon. AAB members attend training sessions and seminars to keep up to date with changes in education and help the academy do its job effectively. They also visit the academy to meet with the Head of Academy, other members of staff and pupils to help us find out how the school is progressing towards its targets.
